When I compiled this list, I realized all of these songs are little folksy and mellow, so by default, that is the theme of this list! These songs are not particularly joyful in theme, but you know what? Great music by queer artists brings me queer joy! I love to see queer artists succeed!
- I discovered NoSo’s “Let it Die” on the old TikTok algorithm (iykyk) at about 4am in a snow storm one night/early morning. There is so much cozy nostalgia swirling around in these haunting, whispering vocals. It takes you right out of your body and puts you where you need to be. A must listen!!
- FIGHTMASTER’S “Nobody’s Baby” is a folksy, rhythmic song where the guitar holds your heartbeat and literally strums YOU. Their lower singing register brings this song to life and I am smitten.
- “Nail Polish” by Khatumu–this is the ultimate closet song. Folksy, sweet, and innocent. It swayed me back to middle school. I had to look up these lyrics to make sure I had heard them right; she was speaking my language for sure. After all, I painted my nails with a French tip for years and did pageants a few years even longer yet. I even dated these men a bit longer than that and thought I could live inside the closet, too. Khatumu says this all so sweetly, though. The key of the song, the sweet sliding against the acoustic guitar strings, her beautiful vocals, all have me in a chokehold. Love this song.
- I was at work needing some life driven into me one afternoon when I discovered Jennifer Knapp’s “Every Little Bit” and it absolutely woke me up. I was actually looking for new music by my girl. I am a Jennifer Knapp OG and when she came out as queer, I was neither shocked nor swayed. I was ecstatic. I loved this stripped down song, where we can really hear her acoustic guitar chops, perfectly and rhythmically in time with her biting lyrics. “ I recall every little bit.” “You left open the window to the moon.” Yes, Jennifer, that imagery that we need to drink in. That she has always had. This is a beautiful folk song that can rush through your blood with a steady, biting pulse.
